Best Summer Jobs For Teachers
I used to be a teacher, and I know how it goes. When you have those 3 months free from schoolwork, you might as well use them to pad your budget a bit. It’s so smart!
These summer jobs are ideal for any educator that is looking for a way to earn money in between school years.
1. Dogsitting/Dog Walking
It might be a really fun change of pace to care for dogs when you are so used to caring for kids. How busy you stay with this job (and how many dogs you walk) will depend on how much money you hope to earn.
There are apps like Wag! where people can find pet sitters and dog walkers. If you are able to network and get your name out there, you can bypass the app and work directly for people, earning around $14 per hour.
In fact, you might even find a family that wants their pet to stay with you while they go on a summer vacation!
2. Summer Child Care
Your experience as a teacher (especially elementary teachers) will give you a boost ahead of the competition for summer childcare jobs.
When kids are home for the summer, families will need summertime nannies or child care help. The best site to find jobs like this is Care.com.
In fact, you can search Care.com’s summer nanny jobs for families nearby hiring help. This site also has listings for pet care and senior care too.
3. Private Tutor
Teachers make the best tutors because they already know how to break down difficult concepts and make them easier to understsand.
Lots of families hire tutors in the summer, especially if their child is having difficulty in a particular subject.
I personally have experience with being a private tutor and have earned anywhere from $30-$50 per hour! I loved the flexibility of this part-time job and highly recommend it.
It was perfect for extra income in the summer. The best part was that I was able to work with a few of my former students.
4. Uber/Lyft Ride Sharing
I’ve often recommended using these car services as a side hustle for teachers but when school is out, it’s a great summer job for teachers as well!
When you don’t have to wake up early to be at school, you can work as an Uber/Lyft driver late into the night (this is when the rates are highest and there are the most requests).
In fact, there could be tax benefits to driving for Uber or Lyft; such as deducting your mileage, cell phone bill, and any snacks or water bottles you buy for customers.
5. Airbnb
There are lots of people who will fix up their basement or an extra bedroom during busy summertime travel and list it on Airbnb. It’s a fantastic way to earn extra cash and you can use electricity and other household expenses as tax deductions.
Airbnb is one of the rental sites that makes the entire process easy!
If you have a finished basement, turn it into a private guest suite so you can give travelers privacy. Or, if you have a guest house or another space that’s rentable, you can make more than $500 in a month.
6. Virtual Assistant
When searching for summer jobs for teachers, your strong communication skills and ability to organize tasks and plan ahead makes you an excellent candidate to be a virtual assistant (VA).
If you are wondering how much do VAs earn, they can earn anywhere from $10-25 per hour.
A virtual assistant does all sorts of tasks for people such as:
- Organizing editorial calendars
- Updating websites
- Checking and responding to emails
- Creating social media content
My friend Abbey used to be a VA and now helps women make BANK as a virtual assistants. You can check out her free training on how to get started as a VA here. I was never a VA, but I’ve hired a few different VAs that were teachers! They loved the extra income that I provided.
7. Sell On Teachers Pay Teachers
Another way that teachers earn money during the summer is by selling content on Teachers Pay Teachers. In fact, you might enjoy this so much that you keep doing it during the school year too!
It’s free and easy to create an account on TPT. Just fill out the requested information and choose a store name (you can even use your own name).
Keep in mind that TPT takes a percentage of your sales. If you want a higher payout, sign up with a Premium Seller account for $59.95 per year.
I personally sold items (and still sell items to this day!) on Teachers Pay Teachers. I figured that if I was creating it for my classroom, I could package it up nicely and sell it on TPT.
This is a WONDERFUL side hustle that can make you serious money!
8. YMCA Camp Counselor
Being a camp counselor is a really fun way to earn a little extra cash in the summer. It won’t make you rich, but it will pay off as you see what a difference you can make in the lives of the kiddos!
One of the most reliable places to start looking for jobs like this is the YMCA.
You can also look and see if places like Upward Bound, Outward Bound, or your local Parks & Rec department are hiring.
When it comes to summer jobs for teachers, this one has to be one of my favorites!
9. Sell Crafts Online
Express your creativity by making some crafts and selling them online. It’s free to sell on Facebook. Or, you can pay a small fee and sell on Etsy or your local farmer’s market.
If you sell enough products, you could even set up your own Shopify store!
10. Dropbots Company
Are you are really into STEM? Then this idea is just for you!
The Drobots Company hires STEM-loving teachers who also have plenty of tech experience. You would be teaching at drone-themed summer camps across America!
This is definitely a break from the ordinary.
11. Deliver Food/Groceries
There are tons of food delivery services out there – and it’s totally okay to sign up for all of them at the same time.
Some of the most popular delivery apps include:
12. Teach Swimming Lessons
Swimming lessons are often a very short-term job, but you can earn more if you get hired by families as a private swimming tutor/teacher.
Lots of kids struggle to learn how to swim when they are in big groups. Learning one-on-one is more effective for them.
You can find these jobs on Care.com or just by networking and talking to families.
13. Summer Tour Guide
Tour guides are basically teachers for large groups of visiting adults, so you are perfect for this job!
There are companies that hire tour guides for international trips, or you can find something closer to home. If you live in a historic area, there are things like historic walks and even ghost tours you can sign up to lead.
14. Freelance on Fiverr
The best thing about freelancing for teachers is that you can pick up this job when you need extra cash (like in the summer) and then just stop doing it when you are busy during the school year.
The best place to find freelance jobs is on Fiverr. You might be hired to write articles, edit videos, animate videos, or proofread. It all depends on your skills and interests.
15. Transcription
Another job you can do during the summer is a work from home job transcribing or captioning videos or audio files.
The best place to find this kind of work is on Rev.
When you sign up on Rev, you will have to take an English and grammar quiz (easy for English teachers!) and submit a sample transcription.
As soon as you pass, you can start working and earning that cash!
16. Sell On Amazon Merch
Creative teachers, use the summertime to come up with t-shirt designs and sell them on Amazon Merch.
All you have to do is create the t-shirt idea. Then, upload your design to your Amazon Merch account. Amazon will print and ship your t-shirts for you!
The more shirts you sell, the more designs you can upload. And the more designs you upload, the more unique people you can reach!
17. Community Class Instructor
Another fantastic summer job for teachers is teaching a summer class to people through the city or county’s parks and recs department.
Some community class networks will allow you to pitch them your class proposal (I saw a class for fly fishing one time). Think about what you love to do and then teach it to adults.
18. Online Surveys And Focus Groups
You can also spend some of your free time during the summer into cash by taking surveys online or participating in online focus groups.
Below are my favorite survey sites you’ll want to check out:
- Branded Surveys – Take surveys at night while you binge-watch your favorite shows. Making money from surveys has never been easier.
- YouGov – Share your opinion and earn money. It’s that simple!
- SheSays Community – All-female online community where you provide your feedback in turn for a chance to win $50.
19. Youth Sports Coach
If you want to stay active during the summer, sign up to be a youth sports coach! Some of the local community teams are volunteer positions, but if you work with traveling teams, coaching can pay.
You can also work directly with families to train young athletes if you have those skills.
20. House Sitter
Yes, people actually pay other people to stay at their houses while they go on vacation. Usually, this means they also need someone to take care of their pets and plants, so keep that in mind if you aren’t a pet-person.
21. Blogging
Since blogging can become passive income, you can spend an entire summer setting up your blog so that it runs and attracts traffic during the school year.
From ads, sponsored income, and affiliate income, you can earn great side hustle money from blogging.

23. Coach Other Teachers
Lots of teachers take the summer to invest in their professional life and try to learn how to sharpen their skills. Work for other teachers as a coach and share your tricks and knowledge.
This is an excellent opportunity to help other teachers that are struggling with how to teach online or need help with how to communicate with parents.
24. Housekeeper
Of course, if you want a break from people, you might actually enjoy cleaning houses for the summer.
